Poppy Seed

Those who asked for poppy seed can pick them up at the potager anytime. If you want some seed but do not live in Paducah, email your mailing address to me at chris_brooks_janne@yahoo.com and I will send them snail mail.

  1. I have not had luck with poppy seeds in the past. Tell me how and when you plant? Yours are beautiful. I have oriental poppies but I bought plants.

  2. Thanks, Kathy. When I brought the seed home from my mother-in-laws at Chrismas 2008 (see "Poppy Tribute" post,) I sowed several in a plastic container which I placed in a window in the basement to see if they would germinate. They were almost 100% and did well. In the early spring I divided them into clumps and set them in the bed. I also sowed some more seed in the bed. The survival rate was pretty sparse that year, but the ones that made it dropped their seed and this year they were prolific. I also saved seed from last summer and sowed them in the bed. It's hard to know if the plants are from the seeds that dropped or the ones I saved. I really think the secret is in the self-sowing. I hope this helps.
